DEQ fines Flakeboard America Ltd. for water quality violations

Eugene, OR (5/10/2018) —The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Flakeboard America Limited $4,000 for water quality violations at its medium density fiberboard manufacturing facility off North Danebo Avenue.

Specifically, the company exceeded the limit for total suspended solids in its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. The violations occurred in March 2016 and July 2017.

Permit limits are set to protect human health and protect aquatic life.

When calculating the penalty, DEQ took into account the company’s efforts to ensure the violation will not repeated. The company introduced a new cleaning regimen for its sampling system, dredged shallow grass in a receiving ditch and replaced gravel in the floor of the vault. It also re-lined the sides and floor of the sampling vault with cement.

Flakeboard America Limited has until May 21 to appeal the fine.
