Eugene, OR (10/9/2017) —The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Jorge A. Murillo, doing business as Armur Electrostatic Powder Coatings & Sandblasting, $9755 for illegally disposing of waste at an industrial facility off Royal Avenue.

Murillo accumulated about 1,056 tons of spent sandblast material generated by his industrial operation for many years. DEQ also cited Murillo for leaving the waste in an area where it could wash into Amazon Creek and for failing to properly label used oil containers at the site.

It is illegal to dispose of solid waste anywhere except at a permitted disposal facility. Sandblast material can contain paint, metals and other pollutants and can contaminate soil, surface water and groundwater.

DEQ is requiring Murillo to cleanup and remove all spent sandblast material, complete a hazardous waste determination and properly dispose of the material at a permitted disposal facility. DEQ is also requiring him to develop a DEQ-approved plan for ongoing management of the waste generated by his industrial operations.

Murillo has until Oct. 25 to appeal the penalty.
