Under general supervision of the section manager, this position includes performing diverse field work activities by providing quality assistance in planning and conducting studies that require collection of waste and environmental samples for the Bureau of Land and Waste Management. This includes Solid Waste, RCRA, Superfund, Enforcement, Criminal Investigations, and other programs as needed. The employee will also provide technical assistance in these programs and provide support to the Emergency Response, Nuclear Response and Emergency Environmental Surveilance, Weapons of Mass Destruction/ Terrorism and Disaster programs as required.

 Minimum and Additional Requirements:
 A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Agency Additional Requirements: 
Must be able to evaluate all situations presented during field work. Employee is required to work in an environment that will not result in standardized output & will require independent decision making. Must be willing to accept complex tasks & work to resolution and maintain expected demeanor, public and private, at all times. Will assist with coordination of sampling program needs and activities. Employee must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Some travel may be required which would necessitate operation of a State vehicle. Overnight travel may be required. Must be able to work independently and meet strict deadlines. Must have good planning skills and the ability to work with other DHEC staff to gather necessary input. Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with the public and government officials at all levels is necessary.

 Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field; or a bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and one year of environmental experience; or an associate degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and three years of environmental experience; or high school diploma and five years of environmental experience. Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The employee must have 16 hours of college chemistry; good mathematical and statistical skills. If selected for this position, you will be required to provide an official college transcript providing your educational background and degree status. Familiarity with environmental sampling efforts and environmental monitoring. Experience with personal computers, and peripheral equipment; data management skills and proficiency with Microsoft office professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
