DEQ fines ServiceMaster of Salem for asbestos violations

Salem, OR (7/31/2018) — The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined ServiceMaster of Salem $3,833 for failing to have an accredited inspector survey a building for material containing asbestos before a renovation.

The violation occurred in April 2018 at Prince of Peace Church in Salem.
DEQ requires such surveys to ensure that all asbestos is found and properly managed.

While technicians took some samples, state law requires a full survey by an accredited inspector. Asbestos fibers are proven to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

There is no known safe level of exposure.

The company has appealed the penalty.
