Our Drinking Water Monitoring and Protection Unit Manager will be responsible for leading a team of 8 -12 environmental scientists, compliance assistance coordinators, data managers, and program coordinators. Overall, the team provides assistance to public water systems, certified operators, and responsible parties to ensure compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and related federal and state regulations. You and your team will educate, encourage, and inspire water systems in order to provide safe drinking water to all citizens.

As a leader in our Agency, you will work with fellow Unit Managers and the Value Stream manager to ensure unit operations are efficient and effective. Unit operations include: 1) the state’s Monitoring Assistance Program, which provides water sampling and analysis assistance to small public water systems; 2) Compliance Assistance Coordinators, who act as customer service representatives to public water system owners and operators, answering questions, providing templates, and leading outreach events; 3) Water quality data entry and management, including the online Compliance Monitoring Data Portal.

At times, you will need to provide customer service to water system operators and owners and resolve any potential conflicts or misinterpretation of regulations. To be successful in this endeavor, you must be passionate about ADEQ’s mission, vision, and people. You must be comfortable wearing multiple hats and juggling multiple priorities at once.

Familiarity with the Safe Drinking Water Act and Arizona Administrative Code (specifically drinking water rules) is helpful. Experience with or certifications in water system operations, environmental risk, public health, hydrology, geology, environmental law/policy, or project management is also helpful.

Ideal candidate will have:

·         Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental management, environmental or chemical engineering, biology, chemistry,  or other environmental discipline

·         3-5 years of drinking water or environmental experience in a regulatory agency, consulting, or private industry

·         2 years of supervisory/leadership experience

·         Knowledge of management techniques, particularly the coordination of personnel and resources through results-driven leadership, including task delegation, performance specifications, employee motivation, team based problem solving and principles of performance and visual management;  analytical data collection, analysis and interpretation, and of statistical procedures and testing methods; contract, grants administration and procurement procedures; project management and community involvement principles; data management principles and techniques to assure data integrity; public relations and meeting facilitation
