MTD Products Inc. Case Settles for $35,376

Sacramento CA (12/24/2018) – MTD Products, Inc. (MTD) is a Valley City, Ohio, based company that manufactures Robomow brand robotic lawnmowers. MTD sold or offered for sale robotic lawnmowers in California, during the time period of February 2013 to September 2017.

This case was the result of an investigation performed by California Energy Commission (Energy Commission) staff. The Energy Commission’s investigation and testing process identified MTD manufacturing and offering for sale robotic lawnmowers containing a small battery charger system that did not meet the efficiency standard, did not have the proper marking, and were not certified to the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDbS).

To settle this matter, MTD executed a Settlement Agreement with the Energy Commission on December 18, 2018, for $35,376.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). MTD has also agreed to a compliance plan to redesign the noncompliant model to meet the efficiency standard, add the appropriate marking, and certify each model to MAEDbS before continuing to sell into California.
