ABOUT THE WEBINAR: This webinar is directed to public sector government environmental
profession staff involved with administrative, civil and criminal environmental compliance and
enforcement. The webinar will provide information on national issues about per- and polyfluoroalkyl
substances (PFAS). The speaker, Rob Bilott will discuss his involvement and experiences with
information on some case studies, the consequences of PFAS contamination and thoughts on future
regulatory issues.
Mr. Bilott is the author of the book, “Exposure: Poisoned Water, Corporate Greed, and One Lawyer’s
Twenty-Year Battle Against DuPont,” and his story is the inspiration for the 2019 motion picture, “Dark
Waters,” starring Mark Ruffalo as Rob Bilott. Mr. Bilott’s story and work is also featured in the
documentary, “The Devil We Know.”
The following is an excerpt from the US FDA website – https://www.fda.gov/food/chemical-
contaminants-food/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas – Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
are a diverse group of human-made chemicals used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products.
Some PFAS have been more widely used and studied than others. Many PFAS are resistant to grease,
oil, water, and heat. For this reason, beginning in the 1940’s, PFAS have been used in a variety of
applications including in stain- and water-resistant fabrics and carpeting, cleaning products, paints, and
fire-fighting foams. Certain PFAS are also authorized by the FDA for limited use in cookware, food
packaging, and food processing equipment. The widespread use of PFAS and their ability to remain
intact in the environment means that over time PFAS levels from past and current uses can result in
increasing levels of environmental contamination. Accumulation of certain PFAS has also been shown
through blood tests to occur in humans and animals. While the science surrounding potential health
effects of this bioaccumulation of certain PFAS is developing, evidence suggests it may cause serious
health conditions.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Government environmental compliance and enforcement managers,
attorneys, inspectors and investigators. This training will be beneficial for anyone who deals with per-
and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such as inspectors, investigators, regulators, attorneys and
chemists. It may also be beneficial for people that deal with waste disposal and drinking water. No press
or non-governmental employees.
LEVEL: Informational.
LOCATION: Virtual training on Microsoft Teams as a live webinar.
