Chetwynd BC (3/2/2022) – The Conuma Coal Resources Limited (Conuma) Brule Mine is an open pit metallurgical coal mine southwest of Chetwynd. The Environmental Management Act permit authorizes a variety of discharges to surface water, provided that the discharges comply with the requirements set out in the permit. Conuma was given 5 Administrative Penalties totaling $609,000 for multiple permit limit exceedances for nitrates, phosphorous and selenium and failing to provide information to the ministry as required by permit.

Conuma was given a Warning in 2018 and were referred for an Administrative Penalty in 2019 for non-compliances, including discharge characteristic exceedances and failure to comply with sulphate and selenium plans required to manage potential impacts to the environment.
