Medway Block Co., Inc., a concrete block manufacturer with a facility at 120 Main Street in Medway, has been assessed a penalty of $7,465 by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for violating hazardous waste, industrial wastewater, and storm water requirements.

During a routine inspection conducted in August 2005, a MassDEP inspector determined that the company discharged boiler blow-down water and curing oven condensate to the ground without obtaining a Ground Water Discharge Permit, failed to obtain authorization to discharge storm water to an unnamed tributary to Chicken Brook, and failed to comply with numerous hazardous waste accumulation standards.

Under the provisions of a recently finalized consent order, the company will comply with the applicable requirements, many of which were corrected after the inspection, and pay the administrative penalty.

“All wastes generated at an industrial site must be properly managed and disposed of. Discharges to the ground, to ground waters, or to water bodies are strictly regulated, ” said Lee Dillard Adams, deputy director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester.
